The Transition

It was a cold and frosty morning as Richard walked towards his room on campus. He had been up all night studying as his medical exams were forthcoming. It was his second year in school and just like other people he didn't have things going so smoothly for him. He was battling with so many things and had no one to rely on. Not even God. He didn't believe in the existence of God although as a child he was made to believe that there was a God who created and watched over everyone but after he lost his parents and younger sister in a fire accident few years ago, He could never recover from the mental anguish he had experienced. If there was a God, he certainly wouldn't have lost all he had as a family on the very day he had gained admission to study medicine in the university.

Richard would never forget that day. He had gone over to his friends to check his admission status and on seeing that he had been admitted he had called his parents who were extremely joyful. His mother had told him she would go to the market so she can prepare a big feast and his father went to the petrol station to buy fuel so they can power the generator and celebrate his only son's admission.

Later that day, Richard had returned to a building completely wrecked by fire. A building which had been his home and housed his family. A building which now became a graveyard to his parents and his sister Racheal. The details were very gory and Richard never bothered to find out what really happened. The reality was that his whole family had been consumed by fire.

The rear light from a moving car distracted Richard from his thoughts as the car approached the road in speed. Richard was almost at the junction that led to his hostel. His belly rumbled as he had not eaten in the past 24hrs. His uncle who was his guardian had developed a stroke a year ago and could not return to work so things had been difficult for him both financially and healthwise which in turn affected Richard greatly. His monthly allowance had been reduced to N5,000. He couldn't feed himself properly let alone buy textbooks or handouts.

Richard made an attempt to cross the road and on looking left and right he discovered that the car which flashed lights seconds ago was parked on the far end of the road. His instincts told him to ignore this and walk to his room but he couldn't help but figure out why a car was packed on the road at 3:45am.

Without much hesitation Richard walked towards the car but there was no sign of anyone in the car. He tried to open the doors but they seemed to have been locked. He took out his phone from his pocket, switched on the flashlight and pointed it inside the car to be sure no one was inside and that was how he saw it. Right in his very eyes Richard saw thousands of Naira notes scattered about in an opened travelling bag lying on the car seat.

Was this luck shining on him? Was this mother nature looking for a way to feed his hungry stomach. Richard knew the money could sustain him for a long time. Judging by the bundles in which they were packed he was sure it couldn't be nothing less than half a million. All it required was a heavy blow on the window and everything in that bag would be his.
He took a minute to think carefully and afterwards he made up his mind. He knew exactly what he was going to do.

Find out what happens nextweek.

  2. I will not preempt how the story will progress but I hope Richard will make a wise decision. Many, today, were once in his position and they made it without the baggage of guilt for crimes, discovered or hidden. Very good sequence.
